If sun, chlorine, and salt water are like flirty summer cocktails, then fried and frizzy locks are our unfortunate fall-hair hangovers.
What It Is
Dried hair happens when the follicles get damaged and the oils that keep the hair healthy and protected escape.
What Causes It
Heat, sun, chemicals, and salt water are the typical assaults.
Healing the Holistic Way
It's not all about the products.
1. Get Dirty
Cut down the number of times you shampoo to three or four a week, says stylist Andi Scarbrough of the ByuTi Salon, in Los Angeles. Natural oil protects hair.
2. Get Out of the Heat
Hair dryers, flat irons, and curlers further damage frizzled hair. Use a protective spray before styling, and turn down the temp on the tools.
3. Get Down with Oil
Some of the same oils we apply to hair to keep it shiny also help it when ingested. Load up on omega-3-rich avocados, olives, and nuts.

Ready, Wet, Go!
When hair is dry, it isn't very elastic. If you yank on it daily with a brush, it gets stretched and damaged, leading to breakage. Keep a wide-toothed comb in the shower, and, beginning at the bottom, work out knots, moving your way up wet hair to the scalp.
