A sriracha hot sauce maker has been ordered to partially shut down because the spicy spells in Irwindale, Calif. are causing irritation to people’s eyes, nose, and throats. And most recently, the maker Huy Fong Foods has now been told that it can’t ship its products until 30 days after production.
According to CBS Los Angeles:
In a statement, the California Department of Public Health said, in part, 'a hold time was necessary to ensure an effective treatment of micro-organisms present in the [Huy Fong Foods] product. Holding products for a period of time at a specified pH level is one method of controlling those micro-organisms.'
Now they’re could be a sauce shortage.
"We have already received more than 30 angry phone calls today," Damon Chu, president of wholesale Asian food supplier Giant Union in Whittier, Calif. said. "It drives me crazy because this is the first time we have been in this situation."
Chu says that the shut down is particularly strange because the product has been out for over 30 years and there’s never been a problem like this before. In November, a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge ruled that the plant must stop production immediately until experts could identify the smell.
Josie Huang of Southern California Public Radio quoted an email from a company spokesperson who said: "We are still open for operations, but if we are forced to stop production, there will be less 200,000 bottles a day of our product."
Basically, if you love sriracha like I do, you may want to stock up.
