This Flowchart Shows You If You're Eating a Yam or a Sweet Potato
One of the more important debates you might have over the holidays is whether that side dish is a yam or if it's a sweet potato. This flowchart from the Huffington Post clears up the confusion, once and for all.P
Essentially, if it's orange inside, it's a sweet potato. Purple or red flesh are more likely yams, and if it's white, well, that depends. As the Huffington Post explains, all this confusion stems from the USDA:P
In order to differentiate between the two, the USDA started labeling the orange ones as "yams" and the lighter ones as "sweet potatoes." Yams, native to Africa and Asia and other tropical regions, always have a white, purple or reddish flesh. P
